Alloy Tool Steel DIN 1.2550---- an alloy shock-resisting tool steel which is suited for both hot and cold work applications. The tungsten content of this tool steel grade confers fatigue resistance, the chromium content gives depth of hardness and resistance to abrasion. 1.2550 tool steel is suitable for cold work tools subject to heavy shock and uneven loading. This steel is also used with great success for chisels and punches required for heavy work on hard and tough materials. It is suitable for hot work applications where high fatigue strength in combination with medium hot hardness is desirable. Tools made from this tool steel can be water cooled in service with little risk of cracking.

Typical Chemical Composition (%)
Forging: 1050 to 850℃, slowing cooling in furnace.
Heat Treatment of Tool Steel 1.2550
Annealing: 710 to 750℃, slow cooling in furnace (10-20℃/hr), down to approx. 600℃, cooling in air. Hardness after annealing: max. 225HB.
Stress relieving: approx. 650℃, slow cooling in furnace. Hold in neutral atmosphere for 1 to 2hours.
Hardening: 870 to 900℃, oil. Hold 15 to 30 minutes. Hardness obtainable, 58 to 62 HRC.
Tempering: for hot work, 550 to 600℃; for cold work, 200 to 300 ℃. Slowly heating to tempering temperature right after hardening. Recommended to temper 2 or 3 times to increase toughness.

Nitriding: suitable for both bath or gas nitriding.
Properties of Steel 1.2550
Tough, shockproof steel with fairly good edge retaining properties. Moderate deep hardening properties in case of long sections.
Applications of Tool Steel 1.2550
Suited for both hot and cold work applications. Cutting tools (dies and punches) for the processing of plate; cold punches and shear blades; wood working, coining and pneumatic tools. Hot work tools for use at moderate heat.
